“A room without books, is like a body without a soul”

This quote was printed on the first bookmark that Amrita ever used. Even in its crumpled and wrinkled state, it lasted Amrita almost a decade. 

Through her various books, she goes on numerous adventures. It brings colour and excitement to her otherwise average-life. 

When she learned that there were children who didn’t have access to quality books or who didn’t even enjoy reading, her immediate reaction was - she had to rectify it. 

After a lot of phone calls and even a visit, she was finally able to connect with an orphanage, ‘Snehasadan’ where she set-up a book and toy library for the children! 

When she went there, she interacted with boys of all ages in the orphanage. When they were unpacking the big cartons of books and toys, their faces were gleaming. They told her about how happy they were to finally call a book ‘’mine’’. This just further strengthened her belief that children need books.  

Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic did not allow her to continue setting up libraries for underprivileged children. So, what did she do? She improvised! 

All children, including Amrita, were spending a lot of time on the screen. When not attending school and classes, children were wasting a lot of time on social media or playing video games. The idea behind starting the workshop was too utilise these hours more constructively. 

With a vision to make books accessible to all children for free and a goal to make reading enjoyable for all, Tales 'n' Treats  was born in August 2020. 

Every Sunday, the readers meet at 3:30pm on Zoom. The sessions are filled with lessons, jokes, games and competitions! It’s something to look forward to every week. 

The key is to make reading accessible anytime, anywhere. What better way to do that than a virtual library? Amrita formed a Google Classroom where she posts stories and author biographies for the children. 

The children aren’t the only ones learning from this workshop. Every session teaches Amrita something new! Whether it is empathy and sensitivity or which dog is the scariest, each session is an eye-opener. 

When she isn’t nose-deep in books (textbooks included!), she enjoys listening to music, baking and coding.
