OUR STORY

Here at Tales 'N' Treats we believe that learning is more than just studying from textbooks. We aim to be a sort of window to the world for our children.

Tales 'N' Treats started as a reading community in 2019 where we aimed to get children more interested in reading. During the classes, we observed that children did not have much knowledge of the world we live in apart form what their textbooks tell them. We realised that we could bring more value to the the children by exposing them to new avenues.

Through our sessions, we supplement school learning with knowledge outside textbook and skills. We run batches - on Saturdays, we work with Khoj (you can find our work here) and on Sundays, we have our in-house sessions.

Our sessions include exploring different avenues. For example, when we were reading The Wishing Chair, we did a virtual tour of London. We used Google Earth, presentations and videos to immerse ourselves into the city. Having been to London before, Amrita was able to tell the children about the small things about the city; things that could not be found on the Internet. Another time, we had a cryptography session where the children learned Morse Code and we even had a little competition. The session around Christmas was dedicated to reading a few stories from the Bible and making Christmas cards! During Halloween, we learned the history of the festival and discussed about its importance. We learned origami one class to hone our motor skills.

To challenge the children during the breaks, competitions are conducted. Their prizes include books and craft materials! Some of the competitions conducted in the past include a summary, story and essay writing competitions. There have been poster making, researching and different craft competitions as well.
The students and Amrita are connected through their invaluable WhatsApp group. The students reach out for not just help in English but other subjects as well. They have formed a sort of community on there. The Google Classroom is like a library. Books are posted there for the children to read by themselves.
